A grounded memory from Oahu

lived on Oahu for five years, and most of my food memories come from the everyday rhythms-Costco runs, farmers markets, and meals that reflected the incredible diversity of the islands.

A nurse I worked with once brought me a Filipino vegetable I had never seen before and taught me how to prepare it. That moment captured what food often felt like in Hawaii: shared, practical, and rooted in real life.

Rice was at the center of nearly every meal, yet I never cared for white rice.

Over time, I learned how to navigate meals in a way that honored both the culture around me and my own preferences.

Living inside those rhythms shaped how I think about nourishment today-not as a perfect formula, but as something that should fit the person, their culture, and the life they're actually living.

What Pacific Island food taught me about nourishment

Food on Oahu leaned salty, sweet, generous, and celebratory-shoyu on everything. bakery items everywhere, potlucks that could feed a small army.

Because the "default" meal didn't always match my preferences, I learned to get creative: adding protein, pulling in something fresh, shifting portions, and making the plate-lunch structure work without pretending I loved every part of it.

Nourishment isn't about following a rule or fitting into a template-it's about building meals that keep you grounded in the middle of real life, even when the environment isn't built around your tastes.

Gentle Nutrition Takeaways

Start with what's already there

No need to rebuild the whole plate.

Keep meals satisfying. not restrictive.

Add something fresh when it's accessible, not as a rule.

Adjust portions to match your preferences, not someone else's template.

Gentle nutrition isn't about eating "clean." It's about eating in a way that supports your life, your body, and your preferences-even when the environment isn't built around you.

If you’re in Hawaii and looking for nutrition support that’s practical, respectful, and built around real life, I’d be glad to work with you. Whether you’re navigating long workdays, appetite changes, stress, or just want meals that feel more grounding, we can build a structure that fits your routines and preferences.

I’m in‑network with UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, and I can verify your benefits before we meet so you know exactly what’s covered

If you’re ready, you can schedule your first session or reach out with questions.

I’m credentialed with several major insurance plans in Hawaii, including UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, which means most adults can use their existing benefits for nutrition counseling.

Hawaii’s insurance landscape is unique - HMSA dominates the market, Kaiser holds a large share, and UHC and Aetna members often have fewer in‑network nutrition options. That’s where my practice fits in. If you have UHC or Aetna, I can verify your benefits, confirm coverage, and help you understand what your plan includes before we meet.

A Gentle Next Step

If you’re looking for grounded, judgment‑free nutrition support in Hawaii, I’m here. You don’t have to navigate food, appetite, or health concerns alone.
